Nagasaki

(This post was added to a day later with more pictures from MVK's camera.  Note that photos can be made larger by clicking on them.)

Traveling by train in Japan is an exquisite experience.  That they are timely, efficient, clean and pleasant is something we have known from past trips.  But this time, in Kyushu, we have been impressed by the level of attention to details in creating an enjoyable ambience.

We started our touring day after nearly 3 hours on those beautiful trains to visit the historic city of Nagasaki.  We began the day at the Memorial Museum to gain perspective on the events surrounding the dropping of the second atomic bomb.

We continued on to Peace Park

This iconic statue is the center piece

We then sat in the lovely sun for a quick lunch and conversation

Thanks to our Picture Japan sponsors, our students were able to have the experience of dressing in kimonos while walking around Dejima.  Everyone picked out a kimono, and was "dressed" with all the accompanying parts.

Lovely decorations at the "kimono dress up place"

Add your favorite captions to all the following poses - and don't we look good!

We were rather amusing to the employees at Dejima

We then traveled on to Oura Catholic Church, the only one of its kind to make the list of National Historic Treasures in Japan.

And lastly on to Glover Park to witness more impact of the West on Nagasaki.

Birds eye view of Nagasaki Bay and the upper grounds of Glover park. (Can you spot the Trippers?)

Taking time to notice nature: a beautiful (?) 7-legged spider and wild flowers
